Mahjong Titans

Mahjong Titans is the layout a lot of people remember from a desktop shortcut rather than a website, and Agame’s 2007 build keeps the shape of it: classic tile motifs, a stack several layers deep, and the rule that a tile is only selectable when it has a free side and nothing overlapping it from above.

The first decision is made before any tile moves. You choose a difficulty level, and that choice sets how deep and how interlocked the pile will be — the easier layouts leave most of the stack with an open flank, while the harder ones bury the useful faces under ridges that have to be dismantled in order. Freeing the lower rows early matters in the Alchemy board as well.

There is no clock. That single absence is what gives Titans its reputation as the calm one: nothing punishes you for studying the pile for a minute before touching it, and the tension comes from the layout itself rather than from a bar draining in the corner. The tools match that temperament — a hint for when the stack stops speaking to you, and an undo that steps a match back if you realise the pair you took was propping up something you needed. The Pride pile uses the matching rule on a differently drawn set.

The stage is 800 by 500 and holds up well enlarged, so full screen is the sensible default on a desktop monitor, where the traditional motifs benefit from the extra pixels. Mobile and tablet are supported too, with tapping standing in for the mouse.

Empty the pile and the board is won. Because nothing is rushing you, a lost board in Titans is almost always a sequencing mistake rather than a speed one. The Ready board piles the tiles into a different silhouette.

1. Choose the difficulty level you want before the layout is dealt.
2. Look for tiles with an open left or right side and nothing overlapping them from above.
3. Select two identical tiles to empty them off the playing field.
4. Work down through the layers, taking the pairs that release the most buried tiles.
5. Undo a match if it turns out to have removed a support you needed, and take a hint if the pile has stopped making sense.

• Start on the outer edges — in Mahjong Titans the flanking tiles come off cheaply and expose the ridge behind them.
• Pick difficulty honestly — the harder layouts interlock the pile, and a mismatch turns a calm board into a dead one.
• Undo is a planning tool — stepping back one match is cheaper than discovering the block three moves later.
• Take your time — nothing is counting down, so map the whole stack before committing to a direction.
• Run it in full screen — the classic motifs are much clearer with the 800 by 500 stage stretched to fill the display.
