Mahjong Sunset keeps the traditional look — Chinese tile faces, a classic interface, a soundtrack pitched low — and sets it against the light of a sunset. Physical Form released it in 2020, and the appeal is the clean, unfussy presentation more than any twist on the rules.
Its free-tile definition is spelled out plainly: a piece can be taken when nothing rests on top of it and nothing blocks it on the left or the right. That single condition is the whole strategic layer, and reading which pieces are about to become free is what separates a fast clear from a stalled one. Sixteen levels ship with the game, all of them unlocked, so you can go straight to a layout that suits you rather than grinding forward. Scoring is time-based: the aim is to beat your own best time on a board, which makes replaying a familiar arrangement more interesting than the first attempt at it. Mahjong Deluxe Plus piles the tiles into a different silhouette.
The stage is a wide 800 by 450, and the full screen toggle is the easy fix for the etched suit markings, which are small at native size. Touch input is supported alongside the mouse. The same free-tile rule governs Pirate Jong.

How to Play
- Find two tiles showing the same Chinese suit marking.
- Check both are free: nothing on top, and either the left or the right edge clear.
- Click the pair to remove it.
- Clear the layout, then chase a better time on the same level.
- Move between the sixteen levels freely — none of them are locked.
Tips & Tricks
- Watch the side edges — a piece blocked on both left and right is unplayable even when nothing covers it.
- Open the upper rows — every piece taken from the top of the stack frees more than one below.
- Replay for the clock — scoring is time-based, so a layout you already know is where the good runs happen.
- Jump levels — with all sixteen unlocked there is no reason to grind a board that keeps beating you.
- Enlarge the tiles — full screen makes the fine suit engraving readable on the 800 by 450 stage.
