Pink Mahjong

Jewellery, flowers and cosmetics fill the tile faces, and the whole board is pitched in pink, which places it squarely in the girls-games corner of the Flash portals it came from.

Behind the theme it is a plain layered board with no clock at all. That combination is more sensible than it first appears: rings, lipsticks and blossoms are drawn in a similar palette and at similar scale, so they take longer to tell apart than numbered suits do, and an untimed board gives you the seconds that reading them properly requires. The Halloween pile asks the same question of a taller pile.

Pairs lift when a tile has nothing resting on it and one side free, and the board finishes when the last cosmetic has gone. There is no scoring pressure and no level chain behind it, which makes this one of the more genuinely unhurried layouts kept on the site. Another entry from the same shelf is Onet Mahjong.

It is a Flash game running here through the Ruffle emulator, which is the only reason it opens at all in a current browser. The pastel gradients suffer most, banding where they used to blend, the click sound can lag, and full screen belongs to your browser rather than the game. One more board of that sort is Sugar.

1. Look over the pink board and separate the jewellery tiles from the cosmetics.
2. Take two identical tiles that are uncovered and open on the left or right.
3. Clear the raised layers first so the tiles beneath become reachable.
4. Continue until every tile has left the board.

• Shape over colour — nearly everything on this board is pink, so silhouettes are what you match on.
• Flowers are the clearest set — they read fastest and are useful to save for a tight finish.
• Lift the top layers early — the raised tiles hide the pairs you will need at the end.
• Full screen separates the pastels — small tiles in one colour family blur together badly.
• No clock, so double-check — a second look before clicking costs you nothing here.
