Mahjong Duels

Mahjong Duels turns the solitaire layout into a race. You are matched against a real player or an AI opponent, and instead of clearing a board at your own pace you are trying to clear more of it than they do, or to empty it first inside the time limit. LazyLand released this version in 2024.

The tile rules are conventional — a piece is playable when it is uncovered and free on its left or right edge — but the competitive frame changes which pairs you take. Speed beats elegance, because a pair your opponent has also spotted goes to whoever clicks first, and the tile they take may be the one propping up your route. Working the covered edges first pays in the Foody Triple pile as well.

The bonuses are where the duel gets interesting. Alongside shuffles and hints there is an option to freeze the opponent’s tiles, which buys you uncontested seconds at exactly the moment you need them. Around that sits a progression layer: ranks and leaderboards, unlockable levels and competitions, and collectible cards, with tile themes drawn from a range of ancient civilisations.

The stage runs at 1280 by 800 and holds detail well, so full screen is the natural way to play it on a desktop, where reading your own board quickly matters more than usual. The game is available on mobile and desktop, which is what makes the matchmaking pool worth having. Directly alongside it sits Kitchen.

How to Play

  1. Enter the arena and get matched against a live opponent or an AI.
  2. Find tiles that are uncovered and free on the left or right edge.
  3. Match identical pairs to remove them, moving faster than your opponent can.
  4. Use a freeze, a shuffle or a hint at the moment it buys you the most ground.
  5. Clear more tiles than your opponent, or empty the board first within the time limit, to take the duel.

Tips & Tricks

  • Speed over elegance — in Mahjong Duels a contested pair goes to whoever clicks first, so hesitation is expensive.
  • Freeze at the crunch — stopping the opponent's tiles is worth most when you are level, not when you are already ahead.
  • Clear the top layers — the same rule as solitaire, and it matters more when someone is racing you through it.
  • Watch the shared clock — the duel ends on time as well as on an empty board, and a lead in tiles is enough to win.
  • Play in full screen — the 1280 by 800 stage rewards it, and reading your board fast is the whole contest.
