Mahjong Cute Tiles

Mahjong Cute Tiles puts the stacked pyramid on a turntable. The layouts are built in three dimensions, so a pair that is invisible from the front often sits in plain view once the board has been swung a quarter turn. For the rule in plain words, see the guide to rotating boards.

Matching itself is unchanged — two tiles carrying the same picture, both free, both clicked in turn. The wrinkle is what counts as free, since a cube here can be pinned by a neighbour behind it as well as beside it. Inlogic Software hands you four boosters for the knots: undo, shuffle, bomb and hint. The same rotation is at the centre of the Super 3D board.

Fresh layouts arrive as you advance, and the cute artwork carries more weight than it appears to: the faces are small, and the difference between two of them can be a shade rather than a shape. Rotating first and clicking second is what keeps the deeper stacks solvable. Another board that spins between matches is Arkadium's Mahjongg Dimensions Blue.

1. Swing the board with a drag before your first move, so the faces at the back of the stack come into view.
2. Pick two free tiles showing the same picture and click them one after the other.
3. Free means nothing is resting on the tile and nothing is pressed against it from behind.
4. Reach for undo, shuffle, bomb or hint when the remaining cubes stop offering a legal pair.

• Turn before you match — a quarter rotation of the Cute Tiles stack usually exposes two or three pairs that the front view hides.
• Work the top layer down — cubes underneath stay pinned while anything is resting on them.
• Save the bomb for knots — it earns its place on a cluster no rotation can open, not on a pair you could have clicked.
• Watch the shades — two cute faces can differ by colour alone, which is where most wrong clicks come from.
