The pieces are not whole insects but single wings. A pair only becomes a butterfly at the moment you link it, and the finished insect then flutters off the board of its own accord, which doubles as confirmation that the match registered.

The wings lie flat in one layer, so nothing is hidden underneath and nothing has to be dug out. What stops you is geometry. Two wings can be joined when a clear route runs between them with no more than two right-angle turns, which means an obvious pair on opposite edges of a busy board is often unusable until the middle has thinned out.
