The countdown belongs to the board rather than to the move, so a level ends badly if the last pairs are still standing when it empties, and hunting for an elegant solution costs the same seconds as taking the obvious pair. A hint uncovers one pair for you, which is worth holding for the moment the layout looks picked clean. Run genuinely out of moves and the game shuffles for you, but only while a Shuffle item remains; once the last one is spent, a stuck board ends the run.
