5. Repeat until the last pair leaves the grid.

• Count the bends — a route with three corners looks perfectly sensible and will still be refused.
• Free the middle first — tiles packed into the centre have the fewest legal routes and the fewest chances to be reached later.
• Try the outer lane — connect boards of this kind usually let a path run around the outside, which links faces on opposite edges.
• Split the quartet — with four identical tiles on the grid, take the awkward two first and leave the easy neighbours as insurance.
